Here are three things you should NOT do when taking questions.
Number One: If you don’t know the answer, do not throw it out to the audience. You lose control and you don’t know if the answers given are the right ones.
Number Two: If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t fake it. Don’t try to guess. Say this: “I’m drawing a blank right now. If I can’t figure out that answer by the time the presentation is finished, do me a favor. Grab me afterwards and we’ll figure it out.”
And Number Three: When you’re answering a question, do not just look at the person who asked it to you. They may ask another question. You answer that. They ask another, and you’re in a conversation. Do this: Look at the person who asked the question. Finish your thought. Move on to someone else. Finish your thought and continue until you’ve answered that question.
Do NOT do those three things when answering questions, and I guarantee your next presentation will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!
