Speakers: Tips for delivering a POWERFUL OPENING.

Speakers_ Tips for delivering a POWERFUL OPENING

The OPENING and the CLOSING are the bookends of a presentation.

They are extremely important because: "Audiences best remember the first and last things you say and do." Your OPENING has three parts.

  1. A strong opening statement or action that grabs the audience’s attention.

  2. A brief roadmap of what is coming next. (Tell them what you'll be telling them.)

    1. This helps your audience mentally prepare for what you’ll be delivering and makes it easier for them to stay focused.

  3. If you’ll have a Q&A section, how you’ll be handling questions.

    1. Not telling them can cause a variety of  problems. How to handle questions - HERE

Here are Four Tips for delivering a powerful OPENING.

  1. Start with a Compelling Hook

Grab the audience’s attention immediately with an intriguing fact, question, or short story. A surprising statistic, a relevant quote, or a rhetorical question can also work well. The key is to make them curious and eager to hear more.

  2. Define the Purpose or Benefit

Clearly state what your audience will gain from listening. Explain why your topic is relevant to them, so they’re motivated to stay engaged. This creates a sense of purpose and value for their time.

  3. Establish Credibility

Give a brief, relatable insight into who you are and why you’re qualified to speak on the topic. This doesn’t mean a lengthy resume - just a sentence or two that shows you’re knowledgeable, experienced, or connected to the topic in a meaningful way.

  4. Connect on an Emotional Level Try to connect with the audience emotionally from the start. Whether it's humor, empathy, or inspiration, a relatable opening helps create a bond with the audience and invites them into your message.

Follow this advice for a POWERFUL OPENING and my prediction is: Your next presentation will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!
