OWN Your Audience with This Formula:

Own Your Audience!

OWN YOUR AUDIENCE with Passion + Knowledge + Technique

PASSION When delivering a presentation, Passion trumps everything!

Your body language and facial expressions will show the audience how much you care about your topic. Those non-verbal communicators will, when passion runs high, be involuntary. You won’t be able to help yourself!

For many, it is natural to be animated when passionate. (You’ve heard the expression, “They talk with their hands,” in reference to some individuals, haven’t you!)

Your verbal communication: the cadence, loudness of your voice, natural inflections, and pauses will coincide with gestures, body movement, and facial expressions.

You’ve observed that behavior in people who are extremely excited about their charity, political party, products they are selling or something else. They get very expressive, verbally and non-verbally, when conveying that enthusiasm to others. If you were to view a video of their speech, without sound, you’d still know their passion by ‘seeing’ it.

Bottom Line: The higher the passion, the more exuberant the delivery.

KNOWLEDGE Knowing your topic; really knowing your topic, will take you to another level.

The goal is to be perceived as an Expert. People like to work with Experts and they command more money for their products and services.

There will be people in the audience who know the topic, also. Their nods of approval will confirm to you (that’s important), and many in attendance, your expertise.

You’ll attain this level of knowledge and ‘confidence in your competence’ by studying, and continually updating, your comprehension of the topic. • Read articles and books on the subject. • Watch videos on those issues. • Listen to podcasts of interest. • Be in the audience when another speaker is presenting that subject matter.

Knowledge also includes knowing the proper structure of a presentation. You’ve seen and heard people give talks who ramble, repeat themselves, and basically don’t deliver their message well. The audience winds up not GETTING IT!

A Great Presentation should include: • A Title that pulls in the audience. • An Introduction you wrote answering the questions:  • WHY this topic?  • WHY this Speaker? WHY now? • An Opening that: • Grabs the attention of the audience. • Tells them what you’ll be telling them. • How and when questions will be handled. • The Body of the talk using the formula: • Make a Point – Tell a story reinforcing the point. • A personal story if possible. • Three to five points per presentation. • Q&A. • Know the best practices for handling questions. • Closing. • Review the important points of your talk. • A Strong Closing. • The last thing you say and do will be the first thing the audience remembers.

TECHNIQUE The final element of the ‘Own Your Audience’ Formula is Technique.

A presentation has two components: Content and Delivery. Content is the message; Delivery is presenting that message.

Delivery Trumps Content! It is not merely what you say, but how it is presented. It is little things that can make a big difference.

Learn presentation techniques by:  • Reading. • Attending classes. • Observing. • Joining Toastmasters. • Hiring a coach.

Next Step: Practice! – Practice! – Practice! (“The road to perfection never ends!) • Practice in front of a mirror. • Practice “in your minds eye.” • Practice in front of friends and family. • Make a video of your presentation and evaluate it with your coach.

The Goal of All Communication: Verbal, Written, or Visual is the same. We want the recipients, as quickly as possible, to GET IT! They may not agree with everything you present. They may not agree with anything. Unless they GET IT! there cannot be a productive conversation going forward.

The proper Technique combined with Passion and Knowledge will ensure they GET IT!
