Great Athletes Have Coaches. Great Speakers Should, Also!

Updated: Aug 11

Best Speakers have Coaches.

Great Speakers should have Coaches!

Many of us watch the Olympics every four years.

If you’ve paid attention to the commentators and interviews with athletes, the word “Coach” comes up again and again. Many give credit for outstanding performances to the Coaches.

After receiving her Gold Medal, American gymnast Aly Raisman walked straight to her Coach, Mihai Brestyan, and put her medal around his neck. Classy!

More than one competitor left home and moved hundreds, even thousands of miles, to work with the right Trainer. No athlete competing at the Olympics reached this goal by themselves. What they achieved was done as a team –  with their Coach!

One dictionary definition of Coach is: A tutor who gives private or specialized teaching.

Speech and Presentation Coaches fill this role for those serious about becoming Better Speakers and Presenters.

The Coach is the individual who helps someone set and reach their goals. They take their “client” to levels they would not have attained on their own. They see qualities, good and bad, a person often doesn’t know they have. Professional Coaching will better the positive ones and decrease the negatives – maximizing results.

A Great Coach will Instruct, Critique, and Motivate!

The Greatest Sports Teams in Colleges know the value of first class coaching. They compete for the Best Coaches, who are among highest paid of all university personnel.

Professional Athletes and Athletic teams rely heavily on expert Coaches. Although the team is providing one, some individuals hire their own. They believe having right Coach is that important to their success.

Hollywood knows the value of Great Coaches. Some of the best movies are:

  1. Remember the Titans – The story of Herman Boone coaching the first desegregated football team in Virginia.

  2. Friday Night Lights – High School Coach Gary Gaines takes the Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas to the state championship game.

  3. Miracle – The story of how Herb Brooks guided the US Olympic hockey team to a stunning gold medal victory in 1980. The famous locker room speech Herb gave before winning the Gold Medal, as portrayed by Kurt Russell.

Great writers have Exceptional Editors, who also serve as a Coach. An editor will find ways to improve writing the author will almost never see. They are too close to it! From spelling and grammatical errors to suggesting ways to better state something, a trained set of expert eyes will immensely improve the final product. A great coach, whether for sports or presentation skills, will do the same.

Being in the throes of the Political Season, I guarantee candidates at all levels, are getting Coached on their Presentation Skills. There are individuals, who slipped in their Speaking in primary elections, who are no longer in the running. It may not be the only reason for their withdrawal, but a poor debate performance never helped a politician! Political Debates can make or break a Politician. Great Coaching is one way to insure they do their best.

Most Toastmasters consider the Evaluation Portion of their regular meetings, a Micro Coaching Session, to be the most important part of the gathering. A good evaluator, like a professional coach, will compliment the speaker on something in their presentation, point out and give a suggestion for an area that needs improvement, and end with another compliment.

If You Want to Dramatically Better Your Presentation Skills, Find and Hire a Coach Who:

  1. Has Experience Coaching and Presenting.

    1. (I’m much happier taking the advice of a doctor who exercises, watches their diet, and follows the instructions he gives me, aren’t you?)

  2. Will help you with the Content and the Delivery of your Presentation.

  3. Is proficient with PowerPoint/Keynote.

    1. They should know the mechanics of developing a great slide show and what to place on those slides!

  4. Has the Time to focus on You: Your presentations and what you want to accomplish.

  5. You feel comfortable with!

Find a great coach to work with and your presentations will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!
