O VIDEO #1: Nuggets to Lessen the Fear of Public Speaking
This Video is the First of Nineteen about Lessening The Fear of Public Speaking!
Video Transcript
Fred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking.
Here’s one of my “Nuggets to Lessen the Fear of Public Speaking.”
Never, and I mean Never tell the audience you have a fear of public speaking!
I have seen some of the best presentations almost ruined because the speaker got up and said, “I don’t like this. My heart is pounding! I really hate speaking in public.”
Never do that!
Three reasons:
- It could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. No negative talk!
- The audience will start looking for it.
- “Well, I thought he looked pretty good, but he said he was nervous. Let me see. . .maybe his knees are shaking! I think I see some sweat on his brow!”
- Don’t say that!
- It makes the audience feel uneasy.
- They’re going to get away from listening to your message.
- They feel uneasy because you said you feel uneasy.
- Don’t do that!
Never tell the audience you have a fear of public speaking!
Trust me! They are very happy sitting in the audience rather than being in the position you’re in speaking to them.
This stuff works!

Never say never. I have heard people say that before and then heard audience members empathize saying-me too. I get nervous. I have also seen it work when the speaker was so nervous, it affected their performance. But because they told people, the audience was more forgiving and understanding. While I generally agree, there may be exceptions. It should be a case-by-case basis, depending on both the extent the nervousness may impact the presentation AND the makeup of the audience.
Tripp,
You’re a legend in this industry.
