Folks in Your Audience!
Everyone loves to be recognized;
Especially in front of others!
When you, the speaker, gives a shoutout about someone in your audience, it can literally make their day and raise your prestige in the eyes of your attendees.
Has a presenter ever mention you during their talk? If so, you know what I’m talking about.
Let me tell you a story:
Bill Donius was giving a talk about developing a great TED talk at Venture Café, a local community connecting innovators to make things happen. I had seen Bill speak at symposium held at the Federal Reserve Bank a year or two earlier. Although we were connected on LinkedIn and FaceBook, we had never met in person. I approached Bill as he was setting up his equipment for his presentation and introduced myself. I mentioned seeing him talk and how I enjoyed his commentary at that gathering. He commented on our social media connections and how it’s always nice to meet in the ‘real world’ those connections, remembering me and my book, “NO SWEAT! Public Speaking.”
The information Bill delivered at Venture Café was valuable. At one point, when talking about becoming a better speaker, he pointed to me and said, “If you really want to take your presentation skills to a higher level, buy Fred Miller’s book, ”NO SWEAT! Public Speaking!”
WOW! There were over one hundred people in the room and here’s an accomplished TED Talk speaker giving my book and me a shoutout. Money can’t buy an endorsement like that.
There are other ways to give shoutouts to people in your audience. Meeting and greeting people before the event is an opportune time to ask questions like:
- What’s the latest in your industry?
- What challenges lie ahead and where are the greatest opportunities?
Incorporating their answers and mentioning them by name, having received their permission in advance, enhances your credibility. You’ve done your homework and are attuned to the needs of your audience.
People can also receive your shoutout by mentioning their:
- Personal advice.
The individual being shouted out does not have to be in the audience.
A friend of mine, Cathy Sexton, The Productivity Experts, posted on Facebook a picture of Thad James, Sammy J. Balloon Creations, giving a presentation at Experts4entrepreneurs. I commented on her post I was sure Thad’s presentation was – NO SWEAT! Cathy replied to my comment that Thad had given me a shoutout for helping him create his great elevator speech. That is classy!
