T The Opportunity of a Lifetime!
Depending upon their time slot, speakers at the recent National Political Conventions, were seen and heard by thousands to millions of people.
What an amazing time to showcase themselves and their presentation skills! What a fantastic item to add to their resumes!
My mantra is: “Speaking Opportunities are Business, Career, and Leadership Opportunities!”
Obviously, another Speaking Opportunity that could be added to that list is Political Opportunities.
To be on a national stage, at an extremely important event, is something most of us only dream of doing.
Consider the tremendous career boost Barrack Obama received when he gave an outstanding Keynote Address at the 2004 Democratic Convention. Many consider this the first step towards becoming president.
Chris Christie, the RNC Keynote Speaker, and Julian Castro, the DNC Keynote Speaker, both have higher political aspirations than the positions they currently hold. The exposure their speeches had, gave a national audience the chance to see them, hear them, and make judgements on their political future.
Both men will be on the road campaigning for their candidates until the election in November. Every time they speak, their audiences will make conscious and unconscious judgements about their political future. We will see these men taking Speaking Opportunities again and again. They are on track for higher offices!
It wasn’t just politicians who spoke. Ordinary citizens, with allegiances to each party, addressed the audiences. They told personal stories, relevant to the candidate and party of choice, that caught and held our attention. Some will springboard that opportunity into more speeches to promote their candidate and causes they spoke to the nation about.
These “regular” people did an amazing job. Using a teleprompter where the speed is controlled by someone else, a live audience of thousands, and a media audience of many more, is a lot of pressure. My hat goes off to each of them.
The “pros,” for the most part, did well also. Some delivered personal stories of overcoming adversity and hardships and made the needed emotional connection with their audiences.
Politics aside, President Clinton, gave the best presentation. His conversational delivery made him the speaker with the style to emulate. He’s been doing this for a long time and has honed his skills to be the best.
I encourage you to google the speeches of both conventions. Watch critically and listen intensely to the presenters. A presentation has two components; Content and Delivery. Find the good and bad in each. Critiquing them will improve your Content and Delivery.
Do that, and my prediction is this: Your next presentation will be – NO SWEAT!
