Your Elevator Speech Should Open Doors – Not Close Them!

An elevator speech is your opportunity to introduce yourself in a concise and compelling way, typically in under a minute. The goal is to leave a lasting impression, spark curiosity, and open doors to further conversation or opportunities. When done correctly, it serves as your personal key to networking, career advancement, or making connections that could lead to bigger opportunities.
However, many people make the mistake of viewing the elevator speech as just a quick self-promotion or a rehearsed script. They focus too much on what they do and not enough on the value they bring. They end up offering a laundry list of everything they can do, leaving the listener wondering if they'll clean their gutters, rotate their tires, and provide a variety of unrelated services. This kind of speech shows no clear expertise in any one area, and worse, it can make people think you’re just a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. Instead of engaging the listener, it can make them feel like they’re being sold to, which could result in a door closing rather than opening.
The key to a successful elevator speech is connection. Focus on the needs or interests of your listener. Craft your message in a way that resonates with them. For example, rather than just stating your job title, share what problems you solve, what makes you passionate about your work, or how you can help the person you're speaking to.
Always be clear, confident, and engaging, but most importantly, keep it natural. The best elevator speeches feel like a conversation, not a monologue. And remember, your goal is to leave the listener wanting more. Whether it's a follow-up meeting, a business card exchange, or simply the beginning of a meaningful connection, your elevator speech should be an open door, not a closed one.
