Passion + Knowledge + Technique =

P You will OWN your audience!

I’m sure you’ve heard people speak, with great Passion about a subject. Maybe their words and delivery weren’t perfect, but their Passion was so powerful you assumed everything they said was true – correct?

Sometimes, when a ‘Fact Check’ is done, the truth doesn’t always line up with what the speaker espoused. The person might have believed everything they stated was correct. Indeed, it was, maybe, one of the reasons they were so passionate.

Discovering some of what they stated wasn’t true puts a damper on much of what they preached, right? It will also make you think twice before going to another one of their events or embracing their “Call to Action.” Even if a post-talk, “I misspoke” statement is issued, the bell can’t be un-rung.

If the speaker, and it could be you, checks their facts and does research before giving a presentation, they can add valuable Knowledge to their talk.

Audiences love a Knowledgeable Speaker who delvers their message with Passion!

The internet makes it easy to find good, solid, information on almost any topic. Be sure to investigate a variety of sources. Just because you read it, similar to “just because someone said it,” doesn’t mean it is true.

After thoroughly researching their topic and gaining knowledge, the speaker will exude, to their audience, a “confidence in their competence” that enhances their credibility and increases the chances they’ll GET IT! Some audience members might have an understanding of the topic. Hearing statements they know are true grows their confidence in the speaker and increases the likelihood they’ll accept new information as truthful.

Another benefit of Knowing your stuff is that it lessens the Fear of Public Speaking. The quality of your presentation will go up, and the anxiety will go down.

You don’t have to be the leading authority on your topic, but know it well enough that people will perceive you as an Expert. This is especially important if there will be a Q&A Session and necessary if you’ll be closing with a “Call to Action.”

Technique is the third leg of this “Own the Audience” Formula. It means knowing and using all the ComponentsParts, and Elements of a professional presentation. If done correctly, the odds the audience GETS IT! are increased.

A presentation has two Components: Content and Delivery. Content is the material and its Elements are placed in a specific order. Delivery is presenting the Content and has two Parts; Verbal and NonVerbal.

Delivery Trumps Content! Someone could be the world’s leading authority on a subject. However, if they can’t present their knowledge in a manner that EducatesEntertains, and Explains it in a simple manner – their audience will never GET IT!

Paramount to having the “Own the Audience” Formula work is to: Practice! – Practice! – Practice! It’s one of the best ways to perfect your Speaking Technique. A good rule of thumb is: One hour of Preparation for each minute of Presentation. (The above is not a misprint!)

Every serious athlete, singer, musician, and actor spends much time practicing. Coaches tell their athletes, “You’ll play as you practice.”

Great speakers do the same. Steve Jobs, if he had a ninety-minute keynote presentation to deliver, would practice for weeks! This is someone considered to be one of the best presenters, ever!

Malcolm Gladwell, author of the best selling book, “Outliers,” says, “Practice isn’t what you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good!”
