NO SWEAT Personal Branding

O Let’s start with this premise: Everyone should consider themselves to be Self-Employed!

There are very few “Lifetime Jobs,” positions taken with a company when you graduate, and retire from thirty or forty years later.

Lifetime Jobs existed generations ago. Those days are gone, and unlikely to return. Today’s reality is we must consistently hone the skills we have, and add new ones to that inventory. The goal is to become, and be recognized, as an EXPERT! • We like to work with EXPERTS. EXPERTS command more money for their products, services, and skills.

Hand-in-glove with being an EXPERT and Self-Employed means we need to promote ourselves. Personal Branding is one of the main ingredients in this effort.

The above InfoGraph depicts the many ways Self-Promotion/Branding should, and can, be done. These are my Branding Efforts, and the template can be used for yours.

This post, and several that follow, will dissect and explain, each component. Let’s start at 12:00 and go clockwise.

The First Branding Component is your Website.

You must have a personal/business website. If you’re promoting products, services, and skills, there should be a place to let the world know whyYou are the person that should be hired! That place is your Website.

When I first started working on my website, I had great advice from Russ Henneberry, Content Marketing Expert, who told me I should set a goal to produce lots and lots of great CONTENT.

One specific piece of advice I’ve followed is to have the Home Page of my site be my Blog. Each time I post a new article, the Home Page changes – Good! This gives visitors something different to see and read each time they return, and Google more keywords and information to find. Content people will find valuable. Content readers can put into use to build their own businesses and reach their goals.

Do this on a regular basis. Your knowledge, readership, and reputation will grow.

Promote your posts thru social media and email marketing. Be patient because it is a process, not an event.

It is important your site reflects favorably upon you because it will become part of your brand. If this is not a skill you own, this might be a good time to spend some money with a web designer who can set you on the correct track.

The Second Branding Component is an iTunes Podcast Channel.

There are several reasons to do this.

  1. All your Writing should have a Voice!

  2. Someone reading your works should feel as if you are speaking to them.

  3. The audio will appeal to those who are auditory learners. This explains why audio books are rapidly growing in popularity.

  4. Those who learn best by reading, have the text in front of them.

  5. Appealing to both learning styles increase the odds your audience will GET IT!

  6. It’s another location Google, and others, can find you, thus building your reputation.

  7. You’ll become a Better Writer and a Better Speaker!

A few years ago I started posting the audio of each post I wrote. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for improving my writing and my speaking.

Initially, listening to my recording of my post was very humbling. I found grammatical errors, misspellings, and paragraphs that needed rewriting.

It wasn’t just the writing that needed work! I listened and discovered my voice sometimes trailed off when it should have stayed strong. On occasion, I would mumble and would have to replay what I just heard to understand the words. (This is not a good thing for a person who speaks and coaches speaking to have to do!)

It takes trials and errors to get the quality recording and writing I want to be proud of and share.

The experience taught me:

Written Post + Audio Post = Better Writing and Better Speaking.

Bottom line, I am now a better writer and speaker and give this advice as one of my top recommendations for improving speaking skills!
