Publisher Ron Ameln Interviews me at the SBM Business Expo
Small Business Monthly runs the St. Louis area’s largest Business Conference and Expo twice a year. Ron was kind enough to buttonhole me and tape this interview about the publication of my book, “No Sweat Public Speaking!”
Their publication is the premier business publication in the greater St. Louis area targeting the majority of today’s businesses.
Here’s the Transcript Ron: Hi, I’m Ron Ameln from the St. Louis Small Business Monthly. We’re here at the St. Louis business expo and here with Fred Miller who just wrote a great book, No Sweat Public Speaking. How are you today Fred?
Fred: I’m good Ron, good to see you.
Ron: Great, well, let’s talk about the book, why write a book about public speaking?
Fred: Well, a couple reasons, First of all, and you’re a great example of this, speaking opportunities are business opportunities. Speaking opportunities are career opportunities, so the perception of someone who speaks well is that they are an expert, perception is reality people like to deal with experts.
Ron: Yeah, definitely.
Fred: And its most people’s greatest fear 75% of the population has a fear of public speaking?
Ron: Is it still, you know, they would rather die than do public speaking?
Fred: Definitely they would rather die and it holds a lot people back in their careers because they may have a great work record, great education but they can’t communicate. So public speaking is just one of the greatest skills you can have.
Ron: Yeah, definitely. Well let’s talk about some things people do wrong with public speaking and you go through a lot of these points in the book; what are some mistakes people make when it comes to public speaking?
Fred: While they figure they can just wing it, they figure they can just take some notes get up there and wing it.
Ron: I’m probably part of that.
Fred: Well, I always like to say if you’re an athlete you just show up for the games or if you a musician you just show up for the concerts we got to practice, practice, practice, practice – we were just talking for went on air that Steve Jobs weeks he will practice for a 30, 40 minute keynote presentation.
Ron: Yeah, definitely. Well tell me some other things in the book that it will be adventurous to people?
Fred: Okay, there is basically two components to the speech, there is content and delivery. Content is the message, delivery is presenting that message. Delivery triumphs content. So you can have the greatest content in the world but if you can’t present that in a way that educates, entertains, and explains it’s not going to go anywhere. Now on the delivery side, there is verbal and nonverbal. Nonverbal triumphs verbal so if I say Ron, really enjoyed being with you here today.
Ron: Right.
Fred: You get the message. So that’s kind of the essence of it and we go into how to develop practice and deliver those features.
Ron: That’s fantastic. Now you’re doing some public speaking yourself to – were you always a very good public speaker.
Fred: No.
Ron: …Is it – I mean do – are people born great public speakers or –?
Fred: I’m not. I think some people have that better than others but a lot don’t. Now one question may I ask and0 just what we’re talking about some people say I never have given presentations I’m not doing them now, I have no intention of doing it, shouldn’t look at the agenda it skipped this guy, why am I here.
Ron: Right.
Fred: So the point we usually make is even if you never speak in front of a group and you have probably found this it improves your one-on-one.
Ron: Sure.
Fred: And we all speak one-on-one. We also spoke to the fact they’ll help your career, you always look for people who are good speakers for their career and if they are business themselves. And the other thing for most of us it takes us off our comfort zone. When we get off our comfort zone we make it larger.
Ron: Right that’s true and you can like grow from that, helps you grow as a person.
Fred: Yeah.
Ron: Well, great tell me about where you go from here with the book, do you right now promoting it?
Fred: Yeah I do it for the same reason people speak credibility to be seen as an expert. I’m looking for speaking opportunities; I do a lot of one-on-one coaching. I’ve coached pilots, doctors, lawyers; I’ve just coached a young lady who is going to be in the Miss Missouri content.
Ron: Oh! That’s fantastic.
Fred: Yeah, very interesting. So somebody well I say if it’s important you may want to be get some coaching – also looking for workshops to do one. But this is a good go to book if you’re looking for anything in terms of a speech coming up, what to look for, what to do.
Ron: Oh! Definitely, Definitely and as you mentioned even people who don’t do organized speeches I mean if you’re working on accounting firm and you have to present some ideas to two or three people that’s a presentation or even if presenting an idea to your boss or asking for a razor [Phonetic] [00:03:56], you know, those are all presentations yet.
Fred: Good point. There is internal and external communication. In fact when I was in [Indiscernible] [00:04:02] I remember we got a call and it was from a guy who is an accountant, he said I’m an accountant. I’m really good crunching those figures but my boss say if I’m ever going to make partner I’m got to give presentations internal and external, can you guys help me. So well you know yourself, you do speaking and a lot of good things to it.
Ron: Yeah definitely, well wrapping this up. If people want to get a copy of the book or get in touch with you what should they do?
Fred: Nosweatpublicspeaking.com get in touch with me, you can buy the book there, love to talk to you, thank you very much.
Ron: Great, thank you, Fred.
